1935 - 2024
OBITUARY
Daniel Joseph Pendergast died peacefully on June 26, 2024, in his home
in Stewart Manor at the age of 88 surrounded by his wife and two daughters.
Dan was born and proudly raised in THE BRONX where he attended Saint
Anselm Grammar School. He went on to attend All Hollows High School and
graduated in 1953. Dan enlisted in the Army in 1954 and served during the
Korean War, stationed in Germany. Over the years he loved to remind and joke
with his grandchildren that “he had military training!” Dan graduated from
Queens College in 1960 with a bachelor's Degree in Business and had a
successful 38-year career at New York Life Insurance.
A true bachelor, he finally settled down at the “young” age of 32 when he
met Betty, the love of his life. They were married in 1967 and shared a happy
and loving marriage of 57 years. Dan had a sense of humor like no other. He was
known for his quick wit and dry humor which drew people to him for a guaranteed
good laugh. He was kind and generous and always quietly did the right thing not
wanting to draw attention to himself or be recognized.
He truly cared about his family and friends and liked to gather people for an
Irish dance, game of golf, tennis match, annual family trip, or just plain fun! The
activity was always enjoyed, but the happy hours that followed were the highlight.
He was a proud Papa to his four grandchildren and delighted at being present at
all of their activities.
Dan was proud of and cherished his Irish heritage. He had a love of music
and had his Irish tunes playing at all times, so much so that we joked that the words
to the songs were permanently impressed to our memory. Dan and Betty were
known as wonderful dancers and it was a pleasure to watch them glide across
the dance floor whether it was a waltz or a set dance.
He loved his annual St. Patrick's Day tradition where he met his brother, Jack,
for Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and proudly marched wearing the Irish sweaters
their mother, Nellie, knit for them. He had a long and happy life and at the end
he received the same care and love that he always gave to others.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, and his daughters Isabelle Herbrich (Mark),
Danielle Maloney (Andy), and his four grandchildren Ryan, Kailey, Danny, and
Kathryn. He is predeceased by his parents Nellie and Martin, his brother Jack,
and his grandson Sean Maloney.
