1920 - 2025
OBITUARY
Gertrude Helene Airone was born on December 15, 1920, in Manhattan to Helene and Oskar Von Lienen. She grew up in “Hell’s Kitchen” and attended Haaren High School. Her family then bought a house in College Point, Queens.
Just before WWII started, she met Adolph Airone and they started dating. Once the war started, Adolph enlisted in the army, and they were married on December 30, 1943. She followed him to army camps in Mississippi and Colorado before he was shipped overseas to Europe.
Once Adolph returned from the war, they bought a house in Queens Village, Queens and raised their three children. Gertrude always had some kind of job outside the home – a little ahead of her time for that generation. She worked the night shift at the Ideal Toy Factory and then did “home work” making hair nets. As her children got older, she took a job in Manhattan as an executive secretary which turned into a career of over 25 years, working for Diners Club, CNA Insurance and eventually Citicorp. Something of which she was very proud was that in her final position she was working for the uncle of the actor, Kevin Bacon,
Gertrude loved to sew, crochet and knit but her passion was quilting. She made many beautiful quilts, all by hand, and gave them away as gifts to many family members and friends. Several designs she created herself, and one was featured in a quilting magazine.
Gertrude is survived by her three children, Bernard, Alfred and Helene, seven grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by her loving husband, Adolph and her sister Elizabeth.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Gertrude’s name to the ASPCA or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
