1956 - 2023
Tribute - John V. Haller
June 8, 1956 – August 4 , 2023
67 years old
John was the second oldest of the four children born to his mom and dad , Audrey and Bob Haller. He attended Notre Dame grammar school in New Hyde Park , N.Y. , Chaminade High School in Mineola . N.Y. and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Hofstra University in Hempstead , N.Y. in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree in Biology. While attending school , his part time work in the delicatessen/catering business enkindled a passion in him for all things culinary – he loved to prepare and serve food and it was this love of food that led him to his first full-time job after college at George’s Delicatessen in New Hyde Park . He eventually opened his own business – Haller’s Breakaway Delicatessen & Catering in Williston Park , N.Y. which he owned and managed for many years in the 1980s and 1990s. He then moved on to other positions in the food service industry and then , after working at Citarella Gourmet Market in Bridgehampton and Southampton N.Y. for several years , he decided to retire , to take some much-needed time for himself . His career in the food service business consumed much of his free time , especially around the holidays , but he always made a point of being very generous to his young nieces and nephews , especially at Christmas time . Uncle John’s presents were always the best ! As the years passed he did his best to care for his aging mom and dad while he was still working and helped maintain their home as best he could. In addition to cooking , John loved to tend to his garden and was proud of the prodigious vegetables he grew every year. He loved the Hamptons , being on the water and had hoped to some day move to Florida where he could be near the beach , garden year-round , forget about New York winters and be closer to his family.
He is survived his brothers Robert ( Vickie) and Richard , pre-deceased by his sister Kathleen Riegger and also survived by his nieces and nephews Lauren Buesking , Robert Haller (Laura) , Charles Riegger ( Emily ) , Christie Ploszek ( Carter ) , Courtney Eiker (Daniel) , Kristen Van Horn (Hunter ) , Ryan Haller and Matthew Haller and by his great nieces and nephews . John’s family will celebrate his life on Tuesday September 5th from 6:30 -9pm at the New Hyde Park Funeral Home – 506 Lakeville Rd. New Hyde Park , N.Y. 11040. Interment will take place at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood – 111 Old Country Rd. Westbury , N.Y. 11590 on Wednesday September 6th at approximately 11am. In lieu of flowers , donations in his memory may be made to For The Love of Pete’s Pantry , a 501c3 charity with branches in New Jersey and Long Island .
