OBITUARY
Kathleen O’Neill (nee McSweeney) was born on September 30, 1939, in the Bronx, to Kathleen and William McSweeney. She was a parishioner of Holy Spirit in New Hyde Park, New York. On September 13, 1975, she married William O’Neill. She met William (Bill) on March 16, 1974, celebrating the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York City. Thus began 49 years of an amazing loving relationship that culminated in 48 years of devoted marriage, one cherished son and two grandchildren that were her pride and joy.
Beloved wife of William (Ret. FDNY Captain). Cherished mother of Charles and wife Alicia. Adored grandmother of Grace and Conor. Dearest sister of late Elizabeth (May) O’Flynn and late husband Denis, the late John McSweeney and wife Gloria, and late Patrick (Billy) McSweeney and wife Eileen. Loving sister-in-law to Helen Lynch (Francis), Charlene Frail (Thomas) and Brian O’Neill (Elizabeth). Treasured aunt of many nieces and nephews. Proud Godmother of Denise Donaghy (O’Flynn), Philip O’Flynn and Kieran O’Flynn. Dearest friend to many.
Kathleen attended St. John’s Grammar School in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx, graduated from the Gerard School, the Academy of the Sacred Heart Park Terrace.
She worked as a legal secretary for 50 years, first for Charles T. Rice in NYC and James P. Rice in Manhasset. Prior to moving to Long Island, Kathleen commuted from Beacon, NY to her job in Manhasset so Charlie could attend Our Lady of Grace Montessori School. She was a devoted mother and so proud of Charlie and his many accomplishments. More recently, her grandchildren were the source of much pride with their academic and athletic successes as well as their involvement in their church.
Kathleen was heavily involved in politics from a young age, initially as an active member of the Young Republicans Club and was later elected the first female Co-leader of the Riverdale Republican Club. She campaigned for many candidates at the local, state and federal level.
She was an active parishioner of Holy Spirit Church. She was a Eucharistic Minister and held multiple offices in the Altar and Rosary Society. While Charlie was young, she was active at Our Lady of Grace Montessori School, Holy Spirit School, and Chaminade High School.
Most importantly, she lived her faith. We were all beyond fortunate to have such a strong, loving woman in our lives. She made us all feel loved and special. We will miss her so and look forward to the day when we will see her again.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a donation in Kathleen’s memory, the mother of Charles O'Neill (Class of 1995), to the Chaminade High School Torch Fund. VISITATION
