OBITUARY
Merrie Lee Huey of New Hyde Park, Long Island, New York, passed away peacefully at age 100 on April 18, 2024.
Merrie was born on February 14, 1924 to parents Wah Fun & Rose Chin Lee in New Haven, Connecticut. She was very proud of and grateful to her ancestors who immigrated to the US in the 1800s and established the Lee family’s laundry and restaurant businesses. As the fourth generation to live in the US and the first born here, Merrie cherished her memories with her four siblings, growing up Chinese American in New Haven.
After graduating from Junior College of Commerce (Quinnipiac) in 1943, Merrie worked at Yale’s Hall of Graduate Studies where she met her beloved husband, the late Sam Herbert Huey, while he was studying Mandarin at the Yale Army Language School. They married in 1945 and settled in New Hyde Park in 1949, where they raised their four children. Herb served in WW2 and the Korean War, and was honorably discharged as a Major in 1952. Merrie and Herb were among the early members of the Chinese Center on Long Island and the Long Island Chinese Circle, and supported these and other cultural organizations throughout their lives.
In 1974, Merrie began a new career at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. For 22 years, she enjoyed working as Office Manager for the Ophthalmology Department & Eye Clinic, and made many life-long friends.
Merrie will always be remembered fondly for her warmth, sparkle, beautiful smile, quick wit, amazing appetite, and devotion to her family and friends. Merrie is survived by her loving children, Jacqueline Huey, Carolyn (Jeffrey) Jung, Stephen Sam Huey, and Cynthia Huey (the late Bill Wong) Chin; and grandchildren, Bryan and Allison Jung, and Skyler and Devin Chin.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Merrie’s memory may be made to Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation, 870 Market Street, # 901, San Francisco, CA 94102 (https://www.aiisf.org/tributes)
