OBITUARY
Nicholas Vlahos passed away peacefully at home on January 31st. He was born on January 4th, 1927, to Greek immigrants. He grew up in Astoria, NY and enjoyed athletics, especially playing football as the kicker for the Buccaneers in Astoria Park. He joined the US Army and became a parachutist. As a private first-class parachutist, he did 21 jumps out of plane, which was more than anyone in his 82nd airborne division. He was a NYC Sanitation man for 20 years and then worked a second career as a security guard for Harry Winston jewelers in NYC. At 93, he moved to New Hyde Park to live with his daughter Janice and son-in-law Jim and granddaughters Jillian and Jenna along with 2 beloved labrador retrievers, Bradley and Leyla, who he endearingly and unintentionally nicknamed “Brady and Mayla”.
Nicholas was a peaceful, athletic, hardworking and fun-loving man who lived his life with grace and faith in God. He was never angry with anyone and never judged anyone. Nicholas was known to his friends as Nick or Nicky. In Astoria, he developed lifelong friendships with his neighbors and with friends he met at the gym. If he met you once, he considered you his friend. He played paddleball in 37th street park with his friends on Sundays for many years. He went to the gym regularly up until his 90’s and took daily walks around Memorial Park in New Hyde Park in his remaining years.
Nicholas was a loving husband to Marie who predeceased him in 2014. He loved and was loved by his children, Donna, Andy and Janice. He loved his 6 grandchildren. He so embraced his role as a grandfather, that he introduced himself to all people and announced himself on the phone as “grandpa Nicholas.” He was blessed with 3 great-granddaughters. He formed a loving, sweet bond with his great grandson, 3-year-old Ryan, via visits and face-time calls.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in his name to the Alzheimer’s Foundation in honor of his wife Marie.
