OBITUARY

Roland T. Hoffelder

We are saddened by the loss of Roland T. Hoffelder, former FDNY 50th Battalion Fire Chief in Queens and a beloved father, grandfather, uncle and granduncle, on March 25, 2025, at the age of 93. Ron, a partner to his predeceased loving wife, Joan (Sweeney), since 1958, an even-tempered mediator and avid golfer, will be remembered by all as a “gentle giant.”

With a quick wit and sarcastic smile, Ron was the first person you shared a laugh with when you entered a room and the one who thanked you for coming on the way out. He never missed a chance to tell you how special you were to him, beginning with his first use of the term, “princess” — then reserved for his niece, and since used countless times but always with a genuine heart. Ron’s great sense of humor, teasing nature, kind heart, religious upbringing, and general voice of reason will live on in the hearts of family and friends.

He is survived by his children, Robert Hoffelder (formerly Maryann), Nancy Snyder (Curt), Thomas Hoffelder (Kathy), and Carolyn Durnan (Matt); grandchildren, Elizabeth (partner Matt), Andrew (Sarah) and Matthew Snyder; Dorothy, Julianne and Matthew Durnan; Robert Hoffelder; and Katelyn and Ryan Hoffelder; nieces and nephews, Maureen Guidera (Brian), Ronnie Flannery (deceased) (Joe), Joe Farrell (Mary), Pat Nash (Patty), Maryellen Considine (Tim), Joan Nash, Roland Nash (deceased) (Ellen), Tom Nash (deceased) (Jill), Edward Callahan (Mary), Michael Callahan (Felice), Betty Callahan, Kathleen LeClaire (Jerry), Anne Lemanwicz (deceased) (Mike) and many grandnieces and grandnephews.

He is predeceased by his parents, Roland and Elizabeth (formerly Kenny) Hoffelder, and sisters, Marion Nash (Pat), Veronica Farrell (Joe) and Lillian Callahan (Edward).

Born in Rockaway Beach, Queens, New York, he attended St. Agnes High School in Manhattan and Hunter College. Ron was a Korean War enlister and VFW supporter. He resided in Garden City, New York, and was a member of St. Anne’s Parish.
