William Wong Chin

1957 - 2021

OBITUARY

Bill (aka Boo) of New Hyde Park, passed away on October 27, 2021, after a long, brave battle with cancer. He was born March 11, 1957 in New York City to Hong On Wong and King Sau Moy. Bill is survived by his wife, Cynthia and two sons, Skyler and Devin; and his five brothers and their wives and children: Steven, Candy, Audrey, April, Pamela, Mitchell and Tiffany; Stanley, Nora and Eric; Chester, Florence (non-spouse) and Justin Jason; Edward, Tracy, Bear and Everest; Ning, Anna, Calvin and Brandon. He will also be missed by his many cousins.

Bill was raised in Chinatown and educated at Brooklyn Tech HS and Columbia University. In 1987, Bill and Cynthia moved to the Bay Area in California where he continued his early career in finance, business, and technology. Bill also revived his lifelong interest in healing & martial arts, studying for ten years under Grandmasters Dr. Yun Chung Chiang and Professor Hui Ju Liu at the Wen Wu school, which proved to be transformative for him. After relocating to Long Island to raise their family in Cynthia's hometown, Bill earned a Master of Science from the New York College Graduate School of Oriental Medicine and opened his private practice as a Licensed Acupuncturist, Certified Diplomate in Oriental Medicine, Acupuncture & Chinese Herbal Medicine, and Instructor in Taiji, Qigong, and Shaolin. Bill never forgot his roots, often introducing himself as someone who grew up in “a small town…Chinatown,” and remaining friends with “da boyz” for life. He also enjoyed Wong/Chin gatherings, cooking, basketball, travel, reading, and learning languages on Duolingo. Bill lived a good life as a devoted family man and practitioner of healing & martial arts, staying true to his motto: “Do what you love, love what you do. Have faith in your practice.”

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Bill’s memory to Send Chinatown Love, chosen by Devin for the support they give to local merchants in Bill’s hometown, or to Illegal: A New Musical, to support Bill’s hope that Skyler’s story will be seen by more people.
